BESTSELLING INSPIRATIONAL RECORDING ARTIST
HILARY
WEEKS
RELEASES NEW ALBUM IN CONCERT
Salt Lake City,
Utah – Hilary Weeks really was one of the
first women to make a major impact on the LDS
inspirational music industry. For
more than a decade Weeks has delivered music with a rare
combination of assuredness and tenderness to thousands
of listeners. Now, 14 of her best-loved songs (and three
new original songs) are available on
The Collection,
in stores March 2007. She
will
release this album in concert Friday,
April 6, 2007
at Salt Lake City’s Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center
(138 West Broadway) at 7 p.m.
“If someone had told me after
I wrote my first song, that I would someday release six
CDs I wouldn’t have believed them,” she says. “And if
they had told me that I would sing those songs in front
of thousands of people, I would have run. I never had
dreams or plans of becoming a singer or songwriter. I
just liked music. I loved it. It was just that simple.”
But
one simple thing led to another, and her song “He Hears
Me” was recorded on the 1993
Especially for Youth
album. Three years later Hilary released her solo debut,
He Hears Me,
for which she was awarded Inspirational Album of the
Year by the Faith Centered Music Association. Her second
album, Lead Me Home,
followed in 1999. And in 2000, Hilary received Pearl
Awards for Inspirational Album of the Year, Female
Vocalist of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year.
Her
third album, I Will
Not Forget, released in 2001 and broke the
sales records from her previous two albums. In 2002 she
released
Christmastime, an album featuring holiday
favorites as well as original songs. And in 2004 she
released Day of
Praise, an invigorating album filled with
heartfelt inspiration. She has also released
The Hilary Weeks
Songbook, a collection of sheet music for the
most popular songs from her first two albums.
In
addition to her solo releases Hilary has been featured
on an extensive list of compilation albums and has been
the recipient of numerous awards; but for every
achievement, she credits the great love of Jesus Christ.
And in spite of all the accolades and success, her most
beloved moments are those spent with her family.
“I
love being with my family,” Hilary (a self-described
“homebody”) says. “They are the best thing in my life. I
have just been so incredibly blessed. And in addition to
a happy, healthy family, somehow, through encouragement
of wonderful friends, support of a loving family, and
guidance from a patient Heavenly Father my road has also
taken me on an incredible musical journey.”
And it is a journey that
continues with the 2007 release of
Hilary Weeks: The
Collection. Filled with 14 of her most
beloved songs from the past 15 years (plus three new
originals), The
Collection embodies everything upon which
Hilary’s career has been built: love for God, love for
family, love for friends, and love for life.
Tickets for the concert are $15, $12, and $10 and are

Resident
DJ: Shawn Phillips and Producer Songwriter Dave Altamirano
presents...TOGETHER AGAIN Thursdays @ Circle Lounge in SLC.
A night to experience deep, jazzy soulful House and Dance
music.
UNLIKE ANY OTHER PARTY IN UTAH!
This week we welcome GUEST DJ JOSH MAX from SLC, Ut
the following is a bio about this very talented dj...
"When one spends his life completely obsessed with music it
would seem a natural progression for him to become a DJ.
Josh Max grew up an only child and to keep himself occupied
he surrounded himself with music. He was rarely seen without
his boombox or his, then, cherished red Michael Jackson
signature Walkman. Josh was known to spend hours playing and
singing along with his parents vinyl collection made up of
old R&B, 60's Progressive Rock, and Disco. His tastes in
music have always been multifaceted with interests in all
kinds of Rock, Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, and early Dance Music.
As a teen, Josh was introduced to Electronic Music... more
specifically Daft Punk and DJ Keoki. This was a gateway to
the much bigger world of Electronic Music that he would
discover while frequenting clubs around Salt Lake City and
Utah County. Josh got caught up in the local Trance scene as
it hit big in 1999. The energy of Trance and the sounds of
Electronic Music led him to discover other areas of
Electronic Dance Music, namely the deeper, more musical and
“pure” sounds of House.
Josh acquired a much greater understanding of House Music
while listening regularly to "The Vybe" radio show on Hot
94.9. This was his introduction to the soul and history of
the genre, taking him beyond the party and drug scene
associated with Dance Music. The organic and soulful nature
of House reintroduced Josh to the spirit in his roots of
Rock, Pop, R&B & Jazz.
With an unquenching desire to take control of the music,
Josh longed to be the one in the booth. So, he soon picked
up some turntables along with a shoddy mixer and was
determined to teach himself how to mix. Josh then began his
never-ending search for unique, sexy tracks that have that
signature groove... You know the ones.
Josh Max's unique style and passion for House music has been
six-years in the making with modest ventures including a
residency at Club Halo and guest appearances at various
clubs in Salt Lake City. During a break from the DJ scene
Josh took some quality time to redirect his focus and to
acquire new material for his DJ sets. Josh’s new focus led
him to a partnership with Saint Even to create Vuetone.
Together they have produced several remixes for Kaskade and
other artists, which are set for release in the coming
months. Vuetone also has plans to release original material
that includes Josh showcasing his broad vocal abilities.
With his talents as a DJ Josh Max plays a key role in
introducing the masses to the fresh and unique collaborative
enterprise... Vuetone."

THE EFY MEDLEY PHENOMENON
SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- Nobody knew that the combining of
two separate hymns would create a phenomenon throughout the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but ever since
As Sisters In Zion and We'll Bring the World His Truth was
first taught to a group of Especially For Youth participants
early in summer of 1999, nearly one-third of a million have
performed "The Medley" at EFY camps all across the country,
with tens of thousands more singing it in congregations
around the world.
At EFY, singing The Medley quickly became a highlight for
the youth.
"When we sang [As Sisters In Zion & We'll Bring the World
His Truth] on Thursday night, I was so overwhelmed with the
Spirit. I realized how lucky I am to be a member of the true
church surrounded by others who know the truth and love the
gospel as much as I do!! It was amazing!!" said Beth Deever,
an EFY participant from Maryland.
The popularity of The Medley has been a phenomenon
throughout the Church, yet its creation is just as
miraculous.
None of the EFY Coordinators had extensive knowledge of
music theory.
Nor did they know that these two hymns' melodies and
chord structures fit perfectly and could be sung
simultaneously when they asked BYU student and composer
Michael R. Hicks to arrange As Sisters In Zion and We'll
Bring the World His Truth for their summer program.
"I have yet to find two more hymns that match in chord
progression, melody, and theme like these two hymns match"
Hicks said. "The EFY Coordinators were inspired and led to
these two hymns. I was merely the one who noticed how well
the two hymns fit together musically."
Hicks remembers receiving a call from Shauna Fitzgerald,
EFY Coordinator in January of 1999 asking him to arrange As
Sisters in Zion for a new young women's activity they were
planning for the upcoming summer. "I hadn't really sung that
song a whole lot in my life," said Hicks. "So I went home,
found the song in the Hymn book, played through it a few
times and read through the lyrics. I knew right away that
this was a special hymn with a good message."
He then decided to add the first line of the Young
Women's theme as a countermelody so the young women could
sing it with the As Sisters In Zion melody.
He recruited a few EFY counselor friends to perform his
new arrangement of As Sisters In Zion for the EFY
Coordinators. It was an instant hit. Then the coordinators
in charge of the young men's activities pulled Hicks aside
and asked if he could arrange We'll Bring the World His
Truth for the young men of EFY to sing.
"I immediately thought about the two songs together and
it occurred to me that the two chord progressions were
compatible and that the two melodies could work well
together as well." He went home and wrote the second half of
what became the EFY Medley: As Sisters In Zion & We'll Bring
the World His Truth.
Since it's creation, The EFY Medley has been performed
all over the world, including the United States, Lithuania,
Australia, New Zealand, England, Canada, Mexico, Argentina,
Bolivia, Czech Republic, Chile, Brazil, Portugal, China,
Russia, to name a few, and at events including BYU's Women's
Conference, General Young Women's Leadership meetings,
Seminary Graduations, missionary farewells, zone
conferences, General Authority firesides, Youth Conferences,
Pioneer Treks, multi-denominational musical events, and is
even a favorite at BYU tunnel singing.
The EFY Medley has even found popularity outside the
Church. Tyler Hinton, an EFY Office Coordinator, was in
Taiwan when he discovered the EFY Medley phenomenon had
reached a group of Taiwanese high school students. "They had
been practicing it on their own and wanted us to help with
the pronunciation. Even though I'm sure most of them didn't
understand the words, and they weren't members of the Church
(or even Christians), it was an incredible experience to
hear 100 Taiwanese high school students singing As Sisters
in Zion & We'll Bring the World His Truth," Hinton said.
Both songs in The Medley were originally written by
Janice Kapp Perry, the composer of many popular Primary
songs and hymns. While serving an LDS mission in Chile,
Perry utilized Hicks' accompaniment tracks of the Medley as
part of her work with the members of the church. "I
conducted the two pieces where we used Michael Hicks'
arrangements and the instrumental accompaniment is just
exhilarating to the choir," Perry said. "As I conducted them
just singing their hearts out in Spanish and smiling at me
for all they were worth, I recorded it in my heart as one of
the sweetest musical moments of my entire life."
When Hicks was asked to arrange As Sisters in Zion and
We'll Bring the World His Truth for EFY, he was your typical
poor college student. With a limited budget using his own
money, Hicks recorded some synthesizer tracks as an
accompaniment and asked some of his EFY counselor friends to
sing the parts for a CD single he could make available for
those youth interested in obtaining a copy. The initial run
of 2000 units sold after the first few weeks of summer.
It was difficult for Hicks to keep up with the demand.
The BYU bookstore couldn't keep enough CDs in stock.
Seven years later. Hicks is releasing a new CD single of
the EFY Medley. He has re-recorded the arrangement with a
live orchestra.
"It's finally sounding how I wanted it to sound back in
1999, but couldn't bring it to pass then because of my
limited means," Hicks said. He also utilized a large youth
choir for the new recording.
"I wanted it to sound like it does at EFY so those who
were there could remember the feeling of singing it with up
to 1600 other youth," Hicks added.
The new CD single can be purchased for $4.95 at
www.michaelrhicks.com,
by dialing 1-800-613-3053, or by visiting your local LDS
bookstore.

For Immediate Release: The EFY
Medley Phenomenon
Nobody knew in 1999 that the combining of two separate
hymns would create a phenomenon throughout the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since 1999, nearly a
third of a million youth have been taught and have sung the
EFY Medley: As Sisters In Zion & We'll Bring the World His
Truth at Especially For Youth's summer camps held all across
the United States and Canada. For many youth at EFY, singing
the Medley is their favorite highlight of their week.
Beyond EFY, this musical arrangement has found its way
into dozens of different countries around the world and has
been sung in many different languages by youth both in and
out of the Church.
Coordinators for Especially For Youth (EFY) didn't have
extensive knowledge of music theory when they asked BYU
student Michael R.
Hicks to arrange As Sisters In Zion and We'll Bring the
World His Truth for their summer program. They had no idea
that these two hymns' melodies and chord structures fit
perfectly and could be sung simultaneously.

The Forgotten Carols
is a musical theatrical production written and created by
Michael McLean. Framed by the story of a nurse whose empty
life is changed by her patient, John,
The Forgotten Carols
features original songs from the perspectives of
lesser-known characters in the Christmas story. From the
innkeeper who turned Mary and Joseph away, to the shepherd
who slept through the angel’s announcement, the stories of
these overlooked figures in the Nativity help John show his
nurse what the world has forgotten about Christmas. Over the
past 15 years The
Forgotten Carols has been seen by more than
500,000 fans and has become a holiday tradition for families
across the western United States. Cities visited on the 2006
tour include Seattle, Idaho Falls, Logan, Ogden, Orem, Salt
Lake City, St. George, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Cellist
Steven Sharp Nelson takes the spotlight with album debut
Salt Lake City - DATE \@ "MMMM d, yyyy" September 18, 2006
– After a decade of performing with several of Salt Lake
City’s best known artists and having appeared on more than a
dozen award winning albums, cellist Steven Sharp Nelson,
moves into the spotlight with his first CD, released on the
Stone Angel Music label created in 1999 by pianist Paul
Cardall.
Steven
Sharp Nelson’s Sacred Cello is produced by Paul
Cardall and features classical arrangements of popular tunes
like Clair De Lune by Debussy, Rachmoninav’s Rhapsody on a
Theme of Paganini, The Water is Wide, Bach’s Cello Suite,
Chorale, and many more. Several songs feature some of the
artists Nelson has worked with previously including Peter
Breinholt, Jon Schmidt, David Tolk, Marshall McDonald, and
Paul Cardall.
Steven
Sharp Nelson began developing his musical talents at a very
early age. His first composition, for percussion ensemble,
was written before he could even read music. His skills and
interests are rooted in the cello, voice, guitar, and
percussion. Nelson's ability and style span many instruments
and genres of music most aptly in classical, cultural, folk,
and improvisational music. He has written many pieces for a
variety of ensembles, and is most acclaimed for his works
written for symphony, chorale, and for film. Among these
works are "Farewell," a piece written at age 15, which was
performed by the Utah Symphony, "Supplication," an a
cappella piece written for the memory of 9/11 victims, and
"Spanish Trail Suite," a nationally commissioned symphony
commemorating the Old Spanish Trail.
Steven
Sharp Nelson is no stranger to the stage and is also sought
after by recording studios. His cello sounds can be heard on
over 100 different albums some of which have been at the top
of the Billboard charts. He was deemed "the best cellist in
Utah" by KSFI FM100 and in 2004 he was nominated as the best
studio musician of the year by the FCMA.
Sacred
Cello will be released September 12th wherever fine music is
sold, or at his website, www.sacredcello.com.

LDS RECORDING ARTIST, JENNY PHILLIPS, AND
FAMILY, GATHER SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO DISTRIBUTE WHILE ON TOUR
IN SAMOA
LDS recording artist, Jenny
Phillips, is spearheading a nation-wide service project to
gather supplies for elementary schools in Samoa where
Phillips will be touring in July. And helping has become an
affair for the entire family.
Phillips and her husband
Daniel perform more than 250 times each year presenting
LDS-themed concerts both nationally and internationally.
When they heard that students in some of the cities they
will be visiting this summer don’t have basic school
supplies, they knew they had to do more than just sing. They
talked to school officials and got a list of the most needed
supplies. With the help of her 100-member choir, Phillips is
packing bags and boxes to distribute while on tour.
The Phillips’s oldest son
Jonah, age 6, decided he wanted to help by organizing a
crayon-drive with his kindergarten class at Orchard
Elementary School in North Salt Lake, Utah. He will be
making a presentation about the schools in Samoa, Tuesday,
May 30 at 9:30 a.m. and will then gather the crayons from
the students. Jonah will be touring with his family to give
the crayons to the students in Samoa.
Anyone wishing to help can
visit
www.jennyphillips.com for more details about the needed
supplies or to make monetary donations, one-hundred percent
of which will be used to buy supplies for school repairs.

VOCAL POINT
WINS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Brigham Young University
Ensemble Takes Top Honors
New York City, NY – Performing
before a sold-out audience at the Lincoln Center in New York
City, Brigham Young University’s premiere contemporary a
cappella ensemble Vocal Point took first place at the finals of
the 2006 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella.
Vocal Point competed Saturday night, April
29th, against the winners of regional finals held
across the US, Canada and Western Europe. Vocal Point won by a
margin of nearly 60 points – it’s largest margin of victory in
competition this year. Second place went the group Out of the
Blue from Oxford University in England, and third place went to
The Other Guys from the University of Illinois.
“We were just thrilled to make it here,”
said Vocal Point member Jordan Keith. “It was an honor to share
a stage with these other amazing groups. But winning is just
unbelievable.”
In a random selection held before the show,
Vocal Point drew the first performing slot, traditionally a
difficult position in any competition since judges often forget
the first competitors, no matter how good. The group’s
performance, however, was memorable enough at Saturday’s
competition that, after hearing all the competitors, four of the
five judges ranked Vocal Point first place.
“It was an incredible night,” said Dave
Boyce, who co-founded the group at BYU in 1991. “Obviously all
the groups were good or they wouldn’t be here. But to be here in
person and see Vocal Point win was a dream come true.”
The group’s 12-minute competition set began
with an a cappella rendition of the “THX Sound Effect” familiar
to movie goers followed by the “20th Century Fox
Theme” which gave their set a humorous yet vocally impressive
start. Next was an energy-charged arrangement of the original
“Spider Man” theme followed by “He Is Born,” a gospel ballad
written by former Vocal Point member Aaron Edson. Vocal Point’s
performance concluded with the swinging jazz standard “Sing,
Sing, Sing.”
During the group’s introduction, the
competition’s emcee introduced Vocal Point as “The
nicest bunch of guys you'll ever meet.”
Vocal Point has won the right to complete
in the ICCA finals twice before. But in each case, the finals
had been scheduled on a Sunday, and BYU has a long-standing
policy of not allowing it’s athletic or performance | |
