Michael Dowdle's second album of guitar hymn arrangements, "Twenty-Five
Beloved Hymns of the Restoration" is a simple, peaceful collection
that effectively conveys the feelings and message associated with
each song.
The CD includes more well-known hymns such as "Praise to the
Man", Come, Come Ye Saints", and "The Iron Rod",
as well as lesser known songs such as "Come, Sing to the Lord"
and "The Wintry Day, Descending to Its Close".
Each track is a warm, crisp performance, and it is clear that much
attention was spent on creating a high-quality, rich sound. There
is fairly little variation from the melody of each hymn which makes
them familiar and easily recognizable.
As mentioned in a previous review, not
every verse is played on each song, but the album doesn't sound lacking.
In fact, there is nearly two hours of music in all. There is some
variety with occasional verses played in different octaves.
The simplicity of the solo guitar playing makes this a perfect album
for the Sabbath. The music is unobtrusive, flowing, and gentile throughout.
With Dowdle's first-class talent, I would have enjoyed hearing a bit
more variation and embellishment on each hymn, though this is only
personal preference.
Overall, the sound quality of the recording is high, the arrangements
are straightforward, and the mood of the album is peaceful and relaxing.
"Hymns of the Restoration" will certainly be enjoyed by
those who are fond of the guitar.
