 The
BYU Choirs combine on this release through BYU's Tantara Records.
With 16 tracks, four choirs are represented, and several songs have
combined choirs performing the selection. The theme of the album
is the home, so nearly every song mentions the virtues of home.
Here are some of the album's highlights.
"The West Wind" by the Men's Chorus is an intriguing piece
in which the piano accompaniment strongly suggests wind blowing.
Fascinating.
"The Road Home" features the Combined Choirs and pleases
the ear with its beautiful harmonies.
"My Heavenly Father Loves Me" features the Women's Chorus
in a lovely arrangement of the Primary song. It is accompanied by
piano and strings.
"O Home Beloved" is performed by the Men's Chorus, and
is nearly a straight interpretation of Hymn No. 337 in the LDS Hymnal.
It is sung acappella and is well done.
"Wayfaring Stranger" with the Combined Choirs is a strange,
haunting piece in minor keys that disturbs more than it soothes.
"Songs My Mother Taught Me" by the Women's Chorus gives
the feeling of an old-fashioned parlor performance one might have
experienced in the Victorian era. A lilting piece with piano and
violin accompanying.
"Goin' Home" is performed by the Men's Chorus and is based
on "Going Home" from Dvorak's "New World Symphony."
"Pilgrim Song" is a lovely piece performed by the Combined
Choirs and features perhaps the best balance between choral and
accompaniment volume on the entire album.
"Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide" is the closing song and
is performed by the Combined Choirs. The acappella arrangement varies
somewhat but is mostly faithful to Hymn No. 165 in the hymnal, and
is very well done.
The production values are not outstanding, but rather show the unevenness
one can expect from students learning the tricks of the recording
trade. On several tracks, the accompaniment is noticeably louder
than the choir's volume and it is distracting from the beauty of
the choral mastery being exhibited. Overall the album rates an even
3. It is good but inconsistent. Would be a reasonable investment
for the die-hard choir fan and the families of the choir members,
but lacks the standout quality one would expect to warrant an overall
endorsement.
